"Ideas and Support blog - Start a small business based at home"

Who "invented" the blog?

A guy named John Barger is given the credit for coining the term "weblog" and we even know the exact date; Dec. 17, 1997. He used to keep track of links that he visited on his website (Robot Wisdom) and he called that list his "web/log" This diary type format has since grown to over 110 million active blogs according to Technorati, a massive blog search engine. If you want to learn more about the history of blogs there is a lot to be found in Wikipedia.

Our blog, "Ideas and Support - For a Home or Small Business" is focused on new ideas for any small business whether based at home or on Main street. It's intended to be a place to not only share new ideas we might have about starting or running a business but also a place to go online when new problems come up or doubt sets in. Too much of the time we feel alone and frustrated when everything isn't going the way we hoped but it's important to keep in mind this happens to a lot of us! Setbacks (for whatever reason), slow weeks when the customers or jobs just aren't there and money gets tight and the opposite, things are taking off nicely but you can't keep up. We hope to see a lot of complaints on that last one!

"There's no good idea that can't be improved on." Michael Eisner

Blog Terms

You should feel comfortable when blogging and you really should do it often, not only in your own blog but others too. One of the greatest things about the internet is the ability to interact with webpages and the blog is a powerful tool. So powerful that those running for political office around the world have one!

Below is a list of blogging terms to help you feel more comfortable when going to a blog. The most important one to remember probably is "blogroll" because in order to be found by the most popular search engines, (ie., ©Google and ©Yahoo) it will help to get as many other blogs linking to you as possible and being in a lot of blogrolls can provide this.

Blog terms, compliments of "Wikipedia"

  • Audioblog: A blog where the posts consist mainly of voice recordings sent by mobile phone
  • RSS feed:The file containing a blog’s latest posts. It is read by an RSS aggregator/reader and shows at once when a blog has been updated. It may contain only the title of the post, the title plus the first few lines of a post, or the entire post.
  • Blogroll: A list of blogs, usually placed in the sidebar of a blog, that reads as a list of recommendations by the blogger of other blogs.
  • Podcasting: Contraction of “iPod” and “broadcasting” (but not for iPods only). Posting audio and video material on a blog and its RSS feed, for digital players.
  • Post: An entry written and published to a blog.
  • Subscribe: The term used when a blogs feed is added to a feed reader like Bloglines or Google. Some blogging platforms have internal subscriptions, this allows readers to receive notification when there are new posts in a blog.
  • TrackBack: A system that allows a blogger to see who has seen the original post and has written another entry concerning it. The system works by sending a 'ping' between the blogs, and therefore providing the alert.

Do yourself a favor, get a blog.

As small business owners we should all have a website and a blog. You don't need to pay for a webhost (like © GoDaddy) to start a blog if you use one of the many free ones on the internet. Our choice is Blogger, a small business success story in itself who ended up being bought by ©Google! Blogger has an editor, a spell-checker and a few more options that make it easy to start a blog and maintain it, as do most good blog clients.
